A tharavad name is not a caste surname — it is an address worn as identity: the ancestral house, carried by everyone who descends from it. Among the Mappila Muslim families of the Malabar coast, the house name travels ahead of given names, so a person is first of a place. Kattakath is one of the rarest of these; public registers record compound forms — Kollikkura Kattakath, Kattakath Mulangat — the pattern of a house name joining with others as branches married and moved.
When കാട് leads a compound, the ṭ doubles by regular sandhi: കാട്ട്-. Malayalam does this everywhere — കാട്ടാന kāṭṭāna, "wild elephant"; കാട്ടുതീ kāṭṭutī, "forest fire." And the language already owns a word built exactly like our name: കാട്ടകം kāṭṭakam — "the forest interior." So കാട്ടകത്ത് reads naturally as "within the forest" — a house named for standing inside the wild green, and a family that was, in its own telling, already there.

Kodungallur, where Arabia first met the Malabar coast.
The name's believed epicentre is Kodungallur, Thrissur — ancient Muziris, the spice port that traded with Rome two thousand years ago. Here stands the Cheraman Juma Masjid, by tradition India's first mosque (AD 629 in the telling; scholars date the surviving structure later). The family belongs to the community born of that first contact — settled inland of the wharves, in the green interior the name remembers. A second cluster of households sits at Alumkadavu, a boat-building shore on the Kollam backwaters, where living beside water and crossing it were the same trade.

C. 100 CE — MONSOON TRADE
Pepper out, gold in.
Muziris sold pepper to Rome; Arab and Greek pilots rode the monsoon there and back. The crossing was seasonal, dangerous, and worth it — and it made the Malabar coast a door between worlds.
1970s– — THE GULF ARC
Work, remittance, return.
Sharjah, Muscat, Abu Dhabi: the arc every Malayali family knows. Kattakath branches built businesses on that corridor — contracting, trade — and kept one foot on the home shore. Dates here are family memory until documents confirm them.
